Craig Kontra for Sheriff - 2018

Craig and Governor Hogan

A nondescript ad in a Pittsburgh newspaper brought Craig Kontra to the Washington area, where he has had a steeler career as a police officer spanning more than 30 years.

It was the mid-1980s, and Kontra was an out-of-work steel worker who has studying criminology at Boyce College in Monroeville, Pa., when he applied for the job as a corrections officer at the Charles County Detention Center. He got the job – and a career was born.

After two years in Charles, Kontra moved to the North Beach Police Department. And a year later, in 1988, he joined the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office. Now a Sergeant, Craig began his Calvert career on road patrol. Starting in 1990, he became involved in the Narcotics Division. And from 1997 to 2015, he supervised the Warrants Division. He is now back on the road as a patrol supervisor.

During his 25-plus years in Calvert County, Craig has received numerous awards and commendations. Among them, he has been named Deputy of the Year on three occasions as well as Maryland Supervisor of the Year.

Sgt. Kontra ran for Sheriff of Calvert County in 2014 and narrowly missed being elected by 625 votes to the then three-term incumbent. It was the most hotly contested of any race in Southern Maryland, drawing more total votes than any other, and was take as a serious rebuke of the incumbent.

During that campaign, Craig outlined a number of ideas for improving the Sheriff’s Department. Now, after 12 years in office, the incumbent has adopted many of these as his own, capitalizing on Craig’s hard work and ingenuity..

“It’s very gratifying to see that many of the visions and goals I had for the Sheriff’s Office in 2014 have been adopted by my opponent,” Craig says. “But I am not done with how I see the department becoming even better under my leadership. I still earnestly believe I can run the department to be even better and more productive for the citizens of Calvert County. And I have other proposals along those lines on which I will elaborate during the coming campaign.”

On a more personal level, Kontra is a 15-year resident of Huntingtown, where he lives with the wife of 26 years, Connie, who works at the Calvert Memorial Hospital. Together, they have one grown son.
