Kontra plans to address issues and ideas to improve the 125-member department in more detail during the campaign. As a long-time member of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office, joining the force in 1988 when it employed just 24 deputies, Kontra understands the intricacies and complexities of the position and how to make it more conducive to serving and protecting its people. “I have worked at the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office for 25 years, under the command of five different sheriffs. I have dreams, ideas, and plans of what I would do that will address some of the concerns I have heard and witnessed in the community” Kontra said.

Kontra strongly believes in community-oriented policing.  He intends to create a strong working relationship between the Sheriff's Office and the people of the county so that informaiton flows more readily and deputies are more approachable.

Here's How:
  • Stop the Prescription Drug Epidemic
Keep the criminal element from coming into the county to buy and sell pills and illegal drugs.  More thorough background checks during traffic stops, using existing technology to check for outstanding warrants and other indicators of potential illicit behavior.  Create a "Pill" Division within a new Drug Unit and partner with other law enforcement agencies, health care providers, and citizen groups.

  • Institute Selective Traffic Enforcement
Direct coverage away from simply writing tickets anywhere and everywhere to statistically high-accident prone areas.  Yield to troopers a majority of patrol responsibility on major thoroughfares, freeing deputies to move back into neighborhoods and work within local communities.

  • Transition Some Desk Jobs
Move more supervisors out from behind the desk and into the field, where they can better use their experience tutoring less-experienced deputies and widening even further the coverage cast by the 125-member Sheriff's Office.  Currently, the top-heavy office employs one supervisor for every two deputies.
